Dear colleagues,
The two events in 2021 that will remain in our memories and history were the rollout of the world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination drive and the second wave of the pandemic.
These two events also defined the work that we do and shaped how we – as individuals and as teams – responded to the biggest health emergency in living memory even as we grappled with personal challenges posed by the pandemic.
India launched its ambitious vaccination drive in phases, beginning with vaccinating health care workers and adults over 60 years and those over 45 with co-morbidities on 16 January. To get to that launch date was a lot of hardwork, sacrifices and endless days. Ten months later, the country crossed the one billion vaccine doses milestone on 21 October 2021, and by 23 December, more 60% of the adult population had been fully vaccinated and 88% receiving their first dose.
The WHO Country Office for India, in particular our field teams, played an important role in supporting the speed, quality and scale of the vaccination drive. I thank you all for your unwavering dedication and commitment to work towards ending the pandemic (I cannot say this enough).
